Investigations
Testing for hyperglycemia is recommended for patients with classic symptoms of diabetes mellitus, and screening is recommended for asymptomatic patients who are at high risk of prediabetes or diabetes (e.g., patients with obesity and additional risk factors). The diagnosis is made based on blood glucose or HbA1c levels.
| Diagnosis | Diabetes | Prediabetes |
| 1.Glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) | 48 mmol/mol (6.5%) or more | 42 to 46 mmol/mol (6.0 to 6.4% |
| 2.Fasting Blood Glucose (FBG) | 7 mmol/L or more | 6.1 to 6.9 mmol/L |
| 3.Random Blood Glucose (RBG) | 11.1 mmol/L or more | Not defined; consider further diagnostic testing if between 7.8 and 11 mmol/L |
| 4.. Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) BGC 2 hours after a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test | 11.1 mmol/L or more | 7.8 to 11 mmol/L |
Who is Pre-Diabetic?
A patient who has not yet met the thresholds for type 2 diabetes but has blood glucose
concentrations above the normal range
